While most people expect glasses to simply correct their vision, one second-generation entrepreneur is showing how technology can transform the way eyewear is fitted — making the adaptation to new lenses smoother than ever.
This innovation took center stage at the three-day 33rd Hong Kong International Optical Fair -- opened on Wednesday (Nov 5) -- that features an extensive range of smart eyewear and vision technologies come with AI, virtual reality (VR) and smart systems.
“With the growing demand for professional service in the eyewear market, we have now introduced frames that can play music, take pictures, or even project images,” said Michelle Ng Yat-shan, CEO of Arts Optical International.
As the daughter of the company’s founder and chairman Michael Ng Hoi-ying —a veteran craftsman who built the business from scratch— Michelle Ng joined the firm in 2002, starting in the branding department.
“The company was built from the ground up by my father, who received the Young Industrialist Award of Hong Kong more than 20 years ago. I was deeply honored to receive the same award last year,” Ng shared.
Now serving as president of the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association, Ng said she hopes to strengthen collaboration between Hong Kong and mainland eyewear industries through talent exchange and technology integration, paving the way for a new era of innovation and development.
Founded over 50 years ago as a frame manufacturer, Arts Optical has expanded its footprint across China and Italy, covering the full spectrum from design and production to sales.
As a standout exhibitor at the Fair, which attracted over 660 exhibitors and buyers from 19 countries and regions, Arts Optical unveiled its groundbreaking “Stepper Opti AI” VR instrument and “ARTSAMOS” smart system—both designed to provide consumers with a more scientific and personalized eyewear fitting experience.
The Stepper Opti AI uses VR-enhanced assessments and AI technology to capture users’ visual habits through simple interactive sessions, delivering highly customized lens solutions while drastically reducing the time required for personalization.
Meanwhile, the ARTSAMOS smart system enables users to tailor every aspect of their frames—from shape and color to size—with a single tap, enhancing the shopping experience while helping optical shops reduce inventory and storage costs.
