The government issued a strong rebuke on Saturday against comments made by members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations concerning a high-profile national security case involving Jimmy Lai Chee-ying.
The government criticized the remarks as misleading and accused the senators of attempting to undermine Hong Kong’s judicial independence and the "one country, two systems" principle.
The government emphasized that the ongoing legal proceedings involving Lai should not be subject to external commentary, as such actions could interfere with the courts’ ability to operate independently.
The government rejected claims that individuals or organizations with specific backgrounds should be exempt from legal accountability, arguing that such suggestions contradict the rule of law.
It accused foreign entities of distorting facts to discredit Hong Kong’s judicial system and pressure its courts, urging U.S. politicians to respect judicial independence and cease what it described as manipulative tactics.
Addressing concerns about Lai’s treatment in custody, the government highlighted the Correctional Services Department’s (CSD) commitment to ensuring a safe, humane, and healthy environment for all persons in custody, regardless of their background.
The CSD provides regular medical checkups, access to specialist care, and hospital referrals when necessary, with independent oversight by Justices of the Peace to protect inmates’ rights.
The government noted that these measures apply equally to Lai, and during a recent court hearing, his legal team confirmed satisfaction with his medical care.
The court also acknowledged the CSD’s efforts, and a professional medical team remains on standby for any emergencies.
The government dismissed allegations of mistreatment, including claims of solitary confinement, clarifying that Lai’s separation from other inmates was at his own request and approved after careful consideration.
The government reiterated its dedication to safeguarding national security by preventing and addressing threats in accordance with the law, while also protecting the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents.
It called on foreign entities to stop interfering in Hong Kong’s internal affairs and judicial processes, pledging to uphold the city’s legal framework and autonomy.
