Hong Kong health officials confirmed a new case of chikungunya fever on Friday, bringing the city’s total to 44 imported cases this year, as authorities urge travelers to stay vigilant due to ongoing global outbreaks.
The latest case reported by the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) today involves a 44-year-old woman from Yuen Long District who fell ill after traveling to Kweiping in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region between September 20 and October 19.
She began experiencing fever, joint pain, and a rash on October 22 and sought treatment at Pok Oi Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department the following day.
Laboratory tests confirmed she was infected with the chikungunya virus, and she is now receiving treatment in a mosquito-free environment, with her condition reported as stable.
The CHP determined the infection was contracted during her travel, classifying it as an imported case, and has notified mainland health authorities as part of its ongoing investigation.
This year, Hong Kong has recorded 44 confirmed chikungunya cases, all linked to travel abroad, with one patient having passed away, though the others have experienced mild symptoms.
