As an international aviation hub, Hong Kong is witnessing a significant increase in the demand for skilled profession-als within the aviation sector. The Hong Kong International Aviation Academy (HKIAA) is set to launch its Bachelor of Science (Honours) Aviation Management Top-Up Program this October.
This new degree program comple-ments the academy’s existing diploma and professional diploma offerings, as well as two master’s programs developed in collaboration with the National School of Civil Aviation of France (ENAC), creat-ing a comprehensive educational pathway for aspiring aviation professionals.
Jacky, a graduate at HKIAA, has nur-tured a passion for aviation since child-hood, viewing airports as symbols of freedom and opportunity.
After graduating from secondary school, he enrolled in HKIAA’s diploma program, subsequently securing an intern-ship at an air cargo company. His commit-ment and the experience he gained facili-tated his transition to a full-time role as a security officer upon graduation.

“I started from scratch and learned about airport operations, passenger ser-vices, and cargo handling through the pro-gram,” he said. The academy’s location at the airport provided him with invaluable exposure to real-time operations, enhanc-ing his ability to apply theoretical knowl-edge in practical environments.
Jacky has completed both the Diploma in Aviation Operations and the Professional Diploma in Aviation Management, which are equivalent to Level 3 and Level 4 of the Hong Kong Qualifications Framework. He is now preparing to enroll in the new bachelor’s program to further his career.
Another student, Lindy, previously participated in HKIAA’s professional diploma program and is currently pursu-ing the Advanced Master in Air Transport Management while working as a security supervisor at Aviation Security Company Limited (AVSECO).
She cited the academy’s esteemed faculty, many of whom boast extensive industry experience, as a key factor in her decision to enroll.
The program not only enhances her professional insights but also provides invaluable networking opportunities with students from across the globe.
In a noteworthy example, Lindy spoke of a classmate working as a lawyer at an airport in the Philippines, who must com-plete a master’s program to qualify for pro-motion to general manager, underscoring the program’s international recognition.
The HKIAA recently launched its Bachelor of Science (Hons) Aviation Management Top-Up Program, cre-ated through collaboration with Coventry University in the UK.
The program’s 12 to 24-month duration covers vital topics such as aviation opera-tions, management skills, and global indus-try trends, preparing students for nuanced understanding of the field’s operational dynamics and future developments.
Kenny Ma, HKIAA’s Director of Foundation and Academic Programmes, highlighted the increasing interest among industry professionals in pursuing further education, noting that challenges related to time and location often hinder such efforts. The airport-based location of HKIAA facil-itates those already in the aviation industry to continue their education.
Ma further pointed out that the top-up program establishes a clear pathway for diploma graduates to obtain their degrees within five years while gaining practical work experience, thereby enhancing their promotional prospects.
With the launch of Skytopia, a core development project within the Airport City blueprint, there is an anticipated surge in job vacancies across the aviation sector, ranging from entry-level to management positions.
Ma affirmed that HKIAA is committed to refining its programs to keep pace with industry demands, ensuring that young professionals and existing employees are well-prepared for the forthcoming advancements in the sector.
