Hong Kong International Airport experienced a rare incident early today (20th) when a cargo flight arriving from Dubai allegedly overshot the runway during landing and fell into the sea. An airport ground vehicle was suspected to have been struck, with two persons on board falling into the sea and reported missing initially, resulting in one death and one injury.
The Civil Aviation Department reported that an incident occurred at Hong Kong International Airport around 3:50 a.m. today. A B744 cargo flight (flight number UAE9788) arriving from Al Maktoum International Airport in the UAE deviated after landing on the north runway and slid into the sea. Air traffic control personnel immediately notified the Airport Authority and other rescue units according to established mechanisms.
Preliminary information indicates the four crew members on board have been rescued and sent to hospital, while two ground staff fell into the sea due to the incident, with their conditions awaiting confirmation. The north runway is closed due to the incident, while the south and middle runways continue operating.
