Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu has directed all government departments not to underestimate the potential danger of Super Typhoon Ragasa, warning that its impact could reach the severe levels inflicted by Typhoons Hato (2017) and Mangkhut (2018). The warning comes as Hong Kong initiates comprehensive preparatory measures.
In a significant move to ensure a coordinated response, Lee said he instructed the Security Bureau to activate the Emergency Monitoring and Support Centre on Monday morning (Sep 22), well ahead of the storm’s anticipated arrival.
The early activation aims to streamline pre-emptive deployments and interdepartmental coordination.
The Hong Kong leader visited the center this morning to assess preparations, receiving briefings on various response plans and holding detailed discussions with Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan Kwok-ki and Security Secretary Chris Tang Ping-keung.
Highlighting the government’s proactive stance, Lee confirmed that a joint press conference will be held by the Drainage Services, Civil Engineering and Development, and Home Affairs Departments to detail flooding risks and mitigation strategies.
Furthermore, Chief Secretary Chan will lead a team of bureau chiefs on an inspection tour across multiple districts this afternoon to ensure frontline readiness.
With the typhoon’s path and intensity still variable, the government has pledged to continuously monitor the situation and adapt its strategies.
Lee emphasized that all officials must treat the threat with utmost seriousness.
“I have demanded all bureau secretaries and department heads not to underestimate the typhoon’s power. They must make advanced deployments and be fully prepared.”
He also urged the public to remain highly vigilant, stay updated through official channels, and complete all necessary safety preparations ahead of the severe weather.
