A startling accident unfolded on Tsing Long Highway on Monday afternoon when a metal rod pierced the windshield of a Citybus, striking the driver in the chest. Police have arrested a 43-year-old truck driver on suspicion of dangerous driving following an investigation.
The incident occurred around 5pm today as the bus, traveling toward Yuen Long near the Tai Lam Tunnel Bus-Bus Interchange, was hit by a 1.5-meter-long metal rod that smashed through the right side of the windshield.
The approximately 60-year-old driver, though in pain, remained conscious and alert, managing to safely slow down and stop the crowded bus, preventing a more serious incident.
A male passenger, noticing the driver’s distress, alerted emergency services.
Paramedics arrived to find the driver with minor injuries and promptly transported him to Pok Oi Hospital for treatment.
Police sealed off the scene for investigation, recovering the metal rod and working to determine the cause of the incident.
Images shared by witnesses revealed the shocking sight of the rod lodged in the driver’s chest, with a visible hole in the bus’s windshield.
A passenger traveling from Central to Tin Shui Wai recounted hearing a loud bang shortly after the bus passed a gantry, followed by the driver’s call for help.
The passenger, who assisted by calling the police, noted the driver’s composure despite the injury, which likely averted a larger accident given the number of passengers on board.
Citybus reported that initial investigations suggest the metal rod, several meters long, was likely propelled into the air after being run over by another vehicle on the highway.
The company expressed deep concern for the injured driver, who is receiving medical care, and commended his professionalism in safely stopping the bus to protect passengers.
Citybus is collaborating with relevant authorities to investigate the incident and address potential road safety hazards to prevent future occurrences.
