The Hetao Institute of Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences, established by renowned Chinese-American mathematician Yau Shing-tung, was inaugurated on Tuesday (Sep 9).
Located at the Shenzhen park of the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone, the institute will specialize in applied mathematics, which constitutes 50 percent of its research focus.
Fundamental mathematics will account for 25 percent, with the remaining one-fourth dedicated to interdisciplinary fields such as high-performance computing, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence.
Aimed at building an integrated platform, the institute is expected to integrate fundamental research, talent recruitment, and cultivation in mathematics and related disciplines.
Yau emphasized the Cooperation Zone’s unique geographical advantage, enabling seamless movement of international talent between Hong Kong and Shenzhen to maximize their contributions.
“We hope that research in mathematics and interdisciplinary sciences at the Shenzhen Park will drive high-quality development in Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area,” he added.
Yau highlighted that the institute has already recruited 17 top talents and plans to expand its team to 50 to 60 by the end of this year. He added that world-class mathematicians are being invited to join the institute.
“The institute is still in its early stages,” Yau said. “As the team grows, we will implement numerous interdisciplinary applied research projects.”
