Botan’s battle: A mother’s outrage at HK hot air balloon fest

Botan, a single mother from Hong Kong, became an unexpected voice of public frustration at the city’s first AIA International Hot Air Balloon Fest on Thursday, held at Central Harbourfront. 

The event, intended as a vibrant celebration, turned sour when organizers canceled tethered hot air balloon rides due to unapproved permits, leaving attendees like Botan and her son disappointed.

Botan’s passionate, viral interview with local media, where she articulated her anger and demanded accountability, earned her the nickname “Hot Air Balloon Mama” and resonated widely online. Her raw emotion struck a chord, amplifying her call for justice across social media platforms.

A mother’s plan derailed

For Botan, the festival was more than a casual outing—it was a carefully planned birthday treat for herself and a special moment for her son, who has mild ADHD and autism, to unwind before a fencing competition. 

She had hoped the balloon rides would create a joyful memory for him, knowing how such experiences could ease his emotional challenges. Instead, the cancellation left her son devastated, requiring significant effort to comfort him.

Betrayed by mismanagement

Botan’s frustration peaked as she learned the organizers were aware of the permit issues but continued selling tickets, misleading families like hers. “They knew, and they still took our money,” she said in her interview, her voice trembling with anger. 

She rejected the organizers’ offer of ice cream vouchers as compensation, calling it an insult that implied acceptance of their failure.

Taking a stand

Botan’s resolve didn’t end with her viral moment. A former playgroup tutor for children with special needs and now a marketing business owner, she channeled her disappointment into action, leading a group of affected attendees to pursue legal recourse against the organizers. 

She emphasized the broader impact, noting that the fiasco tarnished Hong Kong’s reputation, especially for tourists who had traveled long distances. “This isn’t just about us—it’s about trust and accountability,” she stated.
