A dominant anticyclone is responsible for bringing very hot and predominantly fine weather to southern China, with Hong Kong experiencing significantly elevated temperatures. Afternoon temperatures across the region widely exceeded 33 degrees Celsius on Monday.
The intense heat reached a record level in Sheung Shui, where the mercury soared to 38.4 degrees by 4pm.
This marks the highest September temperature recorded at that weather station since it began operations in 2004. The combination of heat and humidity also triggered isolated showers in parts of Guangdong.
Authorities have issued a prolonged heat alert, advising the public to drink plenty of water and to rest or seek immediate medical assistance if feeling unwell.
The forecast for Hong Kong indicates mainly fine conditions with isolated showers.
Overnight temperatures will remain warm at around 28 degrees, while daytime temperatures in urban areas are expected to reach approximately 34 degrees on Tuesday.
Areas in the New Territories are likely to experience temperatures a couple of degrees higher due to more direct sunlight and less urban cooling.
The very hot weather is expected to persist for the coming days, with forecasts indicating a five-day stretch of temperatures reaching 33 degrees or above in urban areas starting Tuesday.
According to the observatory's nine-day forecast, the heat is likely to peak on Saturday when urban temperatures are predicted to hit 34 degrees.
Residents can expect periods of sunshine mixed with a few showers throughout the week.
