Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu met with Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Jamshid Khodjaev and highlighted the growing trade between the two places in recent years, adding that there is more potential for co-operation in the future.
Speaking in the meeting on Monday (Aug 4), Lee said Uzbekistan has seen significant infrastructure developments and noted that with Hong Kong enterprises' extensive experience in the area, the collaboration could offer valuable construction technology and financing channels.
Lee further encouraged Uzbek enterprises to leverage Hong Kong's highly internationalized and market-oriented business environment, along with its pool of professional services, to expand into overseas and mainland markets for mutual benefit.
Visiting Hong Kong with a delegation, Khojaev pointed out that with the city's rich business experience, investment potential, and capabilities, he is confident the city could make significant contributions to Uzbekistan's economic development, inviting various sectors in Hong Kong to invest in the country.
He noted that more than 5,000 new foreign enterprises have been established in Uzbekistan over the past two years, bringing the total number of foreign businesses to 16,000.
Khojaev stated that the Belt and Road initiative has become a symbol of co-operation among countries in the 21st century, showcasing trust and friendship.
He also highlighted that the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway has positioned Uzbekistan as a logistics center in Central Asia.
Separately, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau Ying-wah praised Uzbekistan for emerging as a key engine of economic development in Central Asia, playing a significant role in the Belt and Road initiative due to its abundant natural resources and large labour market.
Speaking at a business forum, Yau encouraged Uzbek enterprises to explore growing opportunities in Hong Kong.
He also invited Uzbekistan to participate in the upcoming 10th Belt and Road Summit in Hong Kong next month, encouraging more Uzbek companies to invest in the city to explore local and global markets.
