More than 100mm rainfall recorded under first Black rainstorm warning this year

The Southern District and Lamma Island have recorded more than 100 millimeters of rainfall as the Observatory issued the first Black rainstorm warning signal of the year this morning.

Under the influence of an area of intense thundery showers over a broad trough of low pressure, a severe rainstorm is impacting Hong Kong with multiple flooding reports across the city.

More than 70 millimeters of rainfall were recorded over many places, and rainfall even exceeded 150 millimeters over Hong Kong Island and Sai Kung district.

The Education Bureau announced that classes at all PM schools are suspended, while AM schools and whole-day schools that are in session should continue until the end of school hours.

The Black rainstorm warning signal was issued at 9.10 am, and the forecaster lowered the warning signal to Red at 11.05am.

According to MTR Corporation, the B3 exit at Wong Tai Sin station, the A2 exit at Sham Shui Po station, and the A1 exit at Choi Hung are being closed due to heavy rain, as preventative measures against flooding are in place.

Members of the public are urged to stay on high alert and take necessary precautions to reduce their exposure to risk posed by the heavy rain and flooding.
