Hong Kong took a significant step towards sustainable transportation with the announcement of a partnership between Towngas and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) to establish the city’s first public automated hydrogen-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station.

Construction of the project is set to commence immediately at the Hong Kong Science Park, with expectations to become operational by mid-2026. This development marks a significant milestone in the city's transition to green energy.
The innovative system will utilize high-purity hydrogen (over 99.97%) extracted directly from Towngas’s existing pipelines. This hydrogen will be converted into electricity through fuel cells to power EV charging points. Upon completion, the facility is projected to produce 12kg of hydrogen daily—sufficient to supply five 7kW charging stations—and will emit only water vapor, thereby providing a zero-carbon energy solution. The entire process will be fully automated, eliminating the need for manual handling.
Peter Wong Wai-yee, Managing Director of Towngas, mentioned that Towngas’s gas network already contains 50% hydrogen and highlighted the company's over 160 years of expertise in hydrogen technology. He expressed that this project is expected to serve as a model for future hydrogen applications ranging from transport to urban energy solutions.
Albert Wong Hak-keung, CEO of HKSTP, highlighted the project’s significance in advancing Hong Kong’s 2045 Net-Zero pledge. He noted that this collaboration demonstrates the potential of hydrogen to accelerate green mobility and inspire wider adoption of clean energy infrastructure.
The initiative is in line with the government’s Hydrogen Development Strategy, which was unveiled last year to promote safe, large-scale hydrogen use. Secretary for Environment and Ecology Tse Chin-wan commended the partnership for leveraging Hong Kong’s existing gas network to support low-carbon innovation.
As Hong Kong advances towards its 2050 carbon neutrality goal, this project could set the stage for more hydrogen-based solutions, ranging from public transport to renewable energy storage.
Towngas and HKSTP are planning to explore further applications, aiming to position the city as a leader in sustainable urban development.
