The passenger volume at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has reported a 16.5 percent year-on-year growth during the first half of 2025, reaching 29.4 million, with flight movements rising by 10.1 percent to over 192,000.
The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) announced on Tuesday that HKIA had handled a total of 4.76 million passengers and 31,235 flight movements last month, marking a year-on-year increase of 11.2 percent and 5.6 percent, respectively.
AAHK noted that the growth was driven mainly by an increase in transfer and transit passengers, noting that June's overall figures were impacted by reduced travel demand to Japan.
Growth in cargo traffic to and from the Middle East
The cargo traffic has grown 1.9 percent to 2.4 million tonnes in the first half of the year, despite a 1.6 percent drop to 409,000 tonnes in June.
The declines in cargo traffic to and from North America are partially offset by growth to and from Europe and the Middle East, according to AAHK.
Looking ahead, the AAHK expressed a cautious outlook for both passenger and cargo volumes, emphasizing the importance of monitoring economic uncertainties that could impact the aviation industry.
HKIA named "Airport of the Year – Major Cargo Hub"
Additionally, HKIA was named "Airport of the Year – Major Cargo Hub" at the 2025 World Air Cargo Awards organized by Air Cargo Week, which recognizes outstanding innovation, service excellence, sustainability, and leadership in the airfreight industry.
Cissy Chan Ching-sze, Executive Director, Commercial of AAHK, described the award as recognition of the authority's commitment to excellence as a premier global air cargo hub, assuring that continued innovation and enhancements to airport operations and facilities will address the evolving needs of the industry.
