The government is targeting the “basic completion” of the new Huanggang Port building by the end of this year, according to Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan.
Her remarks came after Shenzhen authorities confirmed that the port's reconstruction is expected to be largely completed this year, with the new port set to begin operations in 2026.
In a written response to a lawmaker’s inquiry on Wednesday, the transport chief noted that the superstructure of the new Huanggang Port building is currently under construction.
She also clarified that the arrangements and timetable for the port’s commissioning are subject to further discussions between the SAR government and Shenzhen authorities.
After the redevelopment, the Port will adopt the co-location arrangement and implement the new "collaborative inspection and joint clearance" mode.
Chan highlighted that the new port is designed to handle about 200,000 passenger trips per day, a figure that could increase to around 300,000 once the MTR’s Northern Link Spur Line begins operation.
Cross-boundary vehicle traffic is expected to reach about 15,000 trips per day, she added.
She expressed confidence that the planned capacity will be sufficient to meet the estimated demand in the initial period after the port opens, with manpower deployment arranged in advance.
Meanwhile, authorities anticipated that some cross-boundary travelers currently using other checkpoints will switch to the new port due to its convenient location and connection to Shenzhen Metro Line 7.
A public transport interchange will also be established at the port for both local and cross-boundary transport services.
