Hong Kong Customs has received 2,278 complaints regarding Alliance Medical Group's sudden closure, Customs and Excise Commissioner Chan Tsz-tat revealed.
The private healthcare provider, which specialized in infant and adult vaccination packages, shuttered its Tsim Sha Tsui and Sha Tin clinics without warning on May 1.
As of 5pm on Wednesday (May 21), the highest individual claim amounted to approximately HK$29,000, Chan reported. Customs has launched an investigation that may result in legal action, though officials declined to provide further details.
Authorities discovered the group continued selling medical services and accepting prepayments shortly before closing.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu has ordered a government task force to review regulations governing prepaid services, calling the incident "deeply concerning."
Police have arrested two company officers—a 61-year-old male director and a 31-year-old female secretary—on suspicion of violating the Trade Descriptions Ordinance.
