The Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor position candidate at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) "has been arranged" and is pending approval by the university's council, according to HKU President and Vice-Chancellor Zhang Xiang.
Speaking in an interview with Sing Tao Daily, the sister publication of The Standard, the head of the university revealed that the recruitment process for the position is nearly complete, with a candidate selected.
Zhang noted that the university would announce the details after the council meeting.
Regarding selecting the other three Vice-President positions, Zhang stated that the recruitment has made "good progress" and "reached the final stage."
Meanwhile, Zhang emphasized his intention to lead the university solely to develop it into a prestigious institution and mentioned that cooperation with the council has been smooth.
He also acknowledged that he has sacrificed his research time to fulfill his responsibilities, but stressed that fostering the university's growth is his top priority.
The university's council voted to approve the appointment of several interim vice-presidents without consulting Zhang in May last year.
He openly criticized the council in an email to university staff, students, and alumni, accusing them of "disregarding the fundamentals of good governance."
