The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has received hundreds of applications from non-local students who are suspected of utilizing fraudulent academic qualifications, while none of these applications have led to admissions offers.
The university has affirmed its commitment to addressing cases involving false documentation with the utmost seriousness, employing a meticulous approach during the admissions process.
In instances where there is substantial evidence of fraudulent misrepresentation, the university will report the cases to the police and maintain a strict zero-tolerance policy concerning violations of academic integrity and honesty.
HKU has indicated its intention to further enhance and implement new identification measures to thoroughly investigate applications that contain false statements.
The Education Bureau has expressed that fraudulent academic qualifications severely compromise the admissions processes of tertiary institutions and pose a threat to the international reputation of the city.
The bureau, along with the institutions, adopts a "zero tolerance" stance, emphasizing the establishment of rigorous admissions standards and procedures, as well as clear guidelines for reviewing applicants' academic qualifications, public examination results, and associated documents.
The bureau also stated that all institutions have actively strengthened their admissions protocols, which include the requirement for applicants to provide verification certificates from authoritative third-party organizations to confirm the authenticity of their academic credentials, alongside the use of artificial intelligence to assist in admissions-related activities.
The bureau will continue to communicate with the institutions and support them in improving relevant arrangements to safeguard Hong Kong's academic reputation.
