The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced a new record of 11 local outstanding athletes admitted to the university through the Student-Athletes Learning Support and Admission Scheme (SALAS), including Asian Games gold rower Lam San-tung.
The university has welcomed seven more elite athletes than last year, marking the highest number in its history, with sports spanning rowing, billiards, fencing, baseball and athletics.
Exploring opportunities between sports and business
Lam, who partnered with Wong Wai-chun and nabbed a gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games, enrolled in the BBA management program of the university.
Highlighting the recent developments at the Kai Tak Sports Park, the 26-year-old rower stressed the close relationship between sports and business, especially the importance of branding in promoting sports.
Stepping into his 11th year as a full-time athlete, Lam noted that he struggled to focus on his studies, especially during intense training periods leading up to competitions. However, he can now enjoy university life more after being admitted to the program.
Billiards Player Fu Huan: eyeing top 10 title
Fu Huan, an 18-year-old billiards player and DSE candidate, is among the admitted athletes. He was enrolled in the Bachelor of Economics and Finance program, expressing his desire to balance both sports and academic development.
Having become a full-time athlete only three years ago, Fu reaffirmed his commitment to the sport after winning his first international championship at the FSR Junior Open in 2023.
Confident in achieving level 5 grades in his mathematics and business subjects, Fu hopes to pursue his business studies and AI knowledge to prepare for a career in investment banking.
Currently ranked 37th by the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA), Fu aims to make it into the top 10 within the next five years.
