Apart from the traditional methods of paying fines, such as ATMs, postal services and post office counters, citizens can use the newly launched dedicated website and mobile app to verify and view electronic fines tickets, which accept online payments such as credit cards and FPS.
Police reported that over 530,000 vehicle owners or driving license holders have submitted verified electronic contact information as of Wednesday (Mar 26), implying that about 20 percent of car owners will begin receiving electronic fixed penalty notices from June 15.
The force noted that in order to let the public gradually adapt to the digital fixed penalty notices, there will be a transition period, where officers will initially continue issuing the fines tickets in paper form.
As the amendment allowing the police to issue electronic penalty notices passed last June, the Transport Department (TD) has been collecting phone numbers and email addresses from vehicle owners and driving license holders during the license application and renewal process since last November.
The TD expects to gather information from about 2.6 million people, including 2.5 million license holders and 600,000 vehicle owners, with approximately 500,000 being both vehicle and license holders.
