A curious stone structure discovered in Taikoo Shing has ignited a flurry of speculation among netizens regarding its origins and purpose, eliciting both humorous and serious responses.
The discussion began when a netizen shared a photo on a Facebook group dedicated to Tai Koo, showcasing ten stone pillars near Harbour View Garden. The post questioned the purpose of this enigmatic structure.
Some netizens humorously suggested that it was linked to occult practices, dubbing it the "Taikoo Stonehenge." Others joked that the presence of these structures had an impact on local property prices.
On a more serious note, some contributors speculated that the pillars could be remnants from the area's past as a dockyard, possibly part of a structure left behind from that era.
An older resident eventually clarified the situation, explaining that the structure was originally a pergola with a wooden roof. The roof was removed after it began to deteriorate to avoid the costs of repair, leaving only the stone pillars standing.
The resident added that when queried about plans for the site, the management indicated that they had no immediate plans and that over time, the structure had come to be regarded as a historical monument.
Further discussions revealed that there had been several proposals to repair the damage to the structure. However, because it is located between two phases, consent from homeowners in both areas is necessary for any repairs to proceed, leaving it in a state akin to an abandoned historical structure.
Nevertheless, a new development occurred last year when a motion to conduct minor repairs on the structure was approved at a meeting. There are also plans to enhance the surrounding area with additional plantings, and requests have been made for the management office to prompt contractors to commence work this year.
