ZZ license plates hits the road next month

The Transport Department (TD) anticipates that the allocation of the "ZZ" series vehicle registration marks will kick off in February or March this year.

The TD said it is currently allocating traditional license plates under the "ZV" series, as it assigns the plates in ascending alphabetical order from "AA" to "ZZ" with some letter prefixes reserved for specific purposes. 

Upon exhausting the "ZZ" series, the Department will reallocate traditional vehicle registration marks previously returned -- starting from the "WA" series in reverse alphabetical order -- to newly registered vehicles. 

It noted that about three million previously returned traditional vehicle registration marks are yet to be reallocated, which are sufficient to meet demands for the coming 20 years.
