The Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) on Monday introduced a new voice alert service to combat suspicious calls. Starting December 31 (Tue), local mobile and fixed service users will receive voice alerts for calls originating from newly activated local prepaid SIM cards. This initiative aims to increase public vigilance against potential scams.
When receiving a call from a new prepaid SIM card, users will hear a message stating, "This call is made from a new pre-paid SIM card," before the connection is established. This service is provided free of charge by mobile service providers, requiring no prior registration, mobile app installations, or changes to device settings.
OFCA stated that they are committed to enhancing the security of telecommunications services. Collaborating with service providers and law enforcement, OFCA has implemented several measures including the Real-name Registration Programme for SIM Cards and the SMS Sender Registration Scheme. These efforts are complemented by the provision of alerts for international calls and the proactive blocking of suspected fraudulent numbers and websites.
The public is urged to remain cautious, avoid answering unknown calls impulsively, and refrain from sharing personal information or making payments to unverified callers to prevent fraud.
OFCA stated that they will continue to work with the telecommunications industry and law enforcement to tackle phone and SMS scams, strengthen public education, and increase awareness through media campaigns and a thematic website dedicated to preventing phone scams.
