Hong Kong airport thronged by crowds of returning Christmas travelers

Thursday marks the end of the Christmas holiday, and Hong Kong residents are returning to the city in large numbers, with a steady stream of arrivals at the airport.

Some citizens mentioned that they took advantage of the holiday season to travel, aiming to immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere and culture of other countries.

Travelers who visited Japan reported a vibrant Christmas ambiance, with their trips costing approximately HK$30,000 to HK$50,000.

A secondary 2 student named Koo, along with his family, spent seven days in Korea. He noted that Korea displayed a richer Christmas atmosphere, complete with extensive decorations and a large Christmas tree. Even restaurant staff donned Christmas hats.

Explaining their choice to travel abroad instead of staying in Hong Kong, Koo mentioned that his family usually spent Christmas in Hong Kong, but this year they wanted to experience the festive atmosphere abroad, which they found enjoyable.

Another local, surnamed Wong, traveled to Japan for the first time since the pandemic. He was impressed by the festive decorations, including numerous Christmas trees, and spent between HK$30,000 and HK$50,000 during his trip.

Besides those returning, some citizens are just beginning their journeys.

A citizen named Tang is traveling to Malaysia to attend a friend's wedding. She plans to stay for three days, expects to spend HK$10,000 to HK$20,000 and participate in water sports. She noted that flight tickets were cheaper post-Christmas and chose to travel during this period to spend Christmas and New Year's Day with her family.

Another traveler, surnamed Tse, along with her daughter, is heading to Taipei for a five-day trip. They plan to return to Hong Kong before New Year's Eve to join the countdown celebrations with their family. Tse mentioned that traveling post-Christmas is more cost-effective due to fewer travelers.
