The move will further expand the electronic payment options available to more than 27,000 taxi drivers in Hong Kong.
Starting this year, Octopus has opened up its taxi payment networks, accepting UnionPay, AlipayHK, and mainland Alipay payments starting in January, as well as adding WeChat Pay HK and WeChat RMB wallet payments in August.
Octopus said the adoption of electronic payments by taxi drivers and passengers has significantly increased, with 40 percent more taxi drivers actively supporting electronic payment. The average monthly transaction volume also increased by nearly 60 percent.
Currently, 70 percent of taxi drivers are using the commercial version of the Octopus App for receiving payments, the company added.
