Hong Kong customs has confiscated HK$23 million in smuggled headphones and skincare products from a shipment destined for Pakistan.
A Customs spokesman said suspicions arose last Sunday during an X-ray examination of a 40-foot container scheduled for shipment to Pakistan, which was said to be carrying goods including air conditioners, electronic components, and eyewear.
While most of the declared goods were found in the container, suspicion arose regarding four large air conditioner bases, said the spokesman.
Upon dismantling the casings, the batch of unlisted headphones and skincare products was discovered.
Customs believed up to HK$10 million in tariffs could have been evaded if the goods had successfully made their way to Pakistan.
Customs officers were currently investigating the origins, intended destination, and the identities of those involved in the smuggling operation.
