Hong Kong Marriage Equality welcomed the Court of Final Appeal's ruling, which rejected the appeals made by the Housing Authority as well as the government and affirmed equal housing and inheritance rights for same-sex couples.
Jerome Yau Ming-lock, co-founder of the group, stated that the top court issued a strong and clear ruling emphasizing that the authorities' appeals were unanimously rejected in all three cases.
He highlighted the importance of promoting relevant policies swiftly to avoid future legal battles.
The group also hopes the government will soon establish an alternative legal framework for same-sex partnerships, based on the final court ruling in last year's case involving Jimmy Sham Tsz-kit.
Yau added that with the deadline of October 2025 rapidly approaching, there is less than a year remaining to address the legislative process. He urged the government to propose a plan for public discussion and consultation quickly.
Appellant Henry Li Yik-ho said he is relieved that the case has finally concluded. He thanked the court for recognizing the struggles faced by his late husband and for supporting the rights of same-sex couples.
Another appellant Nick Infinger described the court's verdict as an important step for the rights of same-sex couples, emphasizing that having a place to live together is a fundamental right.
Li and Infinger also expressed their unwavering commitment to fighting and advocating for a broader range of equal rights.
The Housing Authority and the government said they respect the judgment and will study it thoroughly and seek legal advice as necessary for appropriate follow-up actions.
