Hong Kong warns of fake tour agency pages

Travel agencies EGL Tours and Wing On Travel have recently filed reports with the police after they found social media pages impersonating them for suspected scams.

The two agencies said the fake pages, which use their names and logos, have placed advertisements online. The pages usually offer unreasonably cheap packages, prompting thousands of customers to make inquiries.

The fraudsters also include the agencies' names in their bogus bank accounts to make them look more genuine.

EGL Tours said it has received thousands of inquiries this month, with one victim losing around HK$20,000 to the scam.

Wing On Travel, meanwhile, said it has set up a dedicated department to report the fake social media pages, and will notify the Travel Industry Authority and relevant banks of their findings.
