Police are currently searching for a man who stole a charging iPhone from a phone accessories store in Yau Ma Tei last Thursday.
The theft occurred at approximately 5 pm last Thursday (Oct 17). Surveillance camera footage, which was later posted online, shows a masked man dressed in a grey t-shirt and black shorts entering the store. He appeared to be surveying the counter, possibly planning his actions.
The footage reveals that the man focused on an iPhone 15 Plus that was charging at the counter.
He glanced around the store to ensure the female staff member was preoccupied with arranging shelves.
Seizing the opportunity, he tried to unplug the phone with one hand first.
After failing to do so, he switched to using both hands, slipped the phone into his pocket after succeeding in doing so, and left the store within seconds.
The female staff member sensed something amiss and followed the man outside, but he had already disappeared from the scene.
After the video surfaced online, netizens identified the thief as a possible repeat offender, noting that he had committed similar thefts recently.
One netizen mentioned that the suspect wore the same outfit during a theft at another phone supply store on the previous day, October 16 (Wed).
The police received a report about the theft on October 17 (Thu) at around 6 pm. The suspect is described as a male aged between 30 and 40 years old.
The case has been assigned to the Yau Tsim police district for further investigation.
