Some groups are introducing panda-themed initiatives to boost a "panda economy" following the arrival of An An and Ke Ke, the giant pandas gifted to Hong Kong by Beijing.
The Federation of Hong Kong Sichuan Community Organizations has partnered with several restaurants in Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok to offer panda-themed dishes, such as panda-shaped rice balls and coffee with panda latte art.
In addition, the Federation will launch a panda-keeper program for youth interested in working at a panda base in Sichuan, which has already drawn interest from hundreds.
The Southern District Council has also launched the "Giant Pandas Are Everywhere" initiative to promote tourism, including a panda-themed special bus service and sailboat event from September 29 to October 1, and various locations adorned with panda decorations and large LED panda displays.
Southern District Councillor Lam Wing-yan noted that these events have sparked a panda craze among residents and suggested the government enhance the panda economy and boost local tourism.
