The Water Supplies Department (WSD) expects the Shek Wu Hui Water Reclamation Plant in Sheung Shui to produce 73,000 cubic meters of reclaimed water daily for around 520,000 residents, resulting in annual savings of over HK$48 million for the government.
WSD said the plant will come into full operation after all residents of the Kwu Tung North and Fanling North New Development Area move in, aligning with its plans to actively introduce reclaimed water.
It noted that the reclaimed water supply could save around 22 million cubic meters of fresh water each year - equivalent to the volume of 8,800 standard swimming pools - and save over HK$48 million in expenses.
The WSD is also upgrading the Yuen Long Sewage Treatment Works to a tertiary sewage treatment facility to convert treated effluent into reclaimed water for non-drinking purposes in nearby areas, as they aim to increase water recycling and seawater flushing coverage from 85 percent to 90 percent of the population.
Additionally, the WSD is developing greywater recycling systems to collect and treat water from bathrooms and kitchens for non-drinking uses.
A centralized greywater recycling system is currently being constructed at the Anderson Road Quarry development site, with a phased water supply expected to begin by the end of the year.
