The Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence will be converted into the Hong Kong Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence, with the new museum set to open to the public on September 4.
The new museum will see more efforts put into promoting the history of the War of Resistance and the significant contributions made by the Hong Kong Independent Battalion of the Dongjiang Column during the War, according to the SAR government.
The Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, told the press at the museum’s pre-opening ceremony on Monday that four “The War of Resistance Galleries” have been set up to narrate the history of the Japanese invasion of China.
The museum will also display commendation certificates for the Hong Kong and Kowloon Independent Brigade of the East River Column, as well as the list of fallen soldiers who died during the war.
Yeung also said the word “war of resistance” highlights the museum's theme of commemorating the history of the war and passing on the spirit of patriotism. It also embodies a profound respect for the heroes who fought in the war, serving as a reminder for future generations to cherish peace.
Meanwhile, the term "Coastal Defence" symbolizes the museum's location in the Lei Yue Mun Strait, which has historically been a crucial strategic location, said Yeung.
“It reflects Hong Kong's longstanding role as the guardian of the nation's southern gateway, closely connected to the country's coastal defense history,” he added.
