A 16-year-old Hong Kong Pokémon trainer was crowned champion in the Pokémon GO category during the Pokémon World Championships this year, being the first Hongkonger to win the title and the first from the Asia-Pacific to lift the Pikachu trophy.

Taking place in Honolulu, Hawaii from August 16 to 18, the Pokémon World Championships hosts multiple tournaments throughout the weekend. Only one person can win each tournament.
Cheng Yip-kai (Yekai0904) from Hong Kong defeated Martijn Versteeg (Inadequance) from the Netherlands by 3-1 in the final of the Pokémon GO World Championship to become the worlds champion, taking home US$20,000 in prize money.
He stormed into the final without losing a single round in his qualifiers.
