Hong Kong residents will have to apply for travel authorization before they can enter 30 European countries that do not need a visa to travel, the European Union announced.
This came after the European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao stated that starting this fall, there will be two new entry requirements for non-EU travelers entering the bloc, including the need to register their fingerprints and facial images at the border.
In addition, the Office noted that travelers coming from approximately 60 visa-exempt countries and territories - including Hong Kong - need to apply for travel authorization via the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) before entering 30 European countries such as France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
The measures will be implemented as planned in the first half of 2025.
Applicants need to apply online before departure.
The relevant permit costs 7 euros, which will amount to around HK$60 and is valid for three years.
