A 29-year-old driver has turned himself in for allegedly rolling his car over a stray cat twice in Yuen Long, claiming that he didn’t spot the cat on the road at the time despite dash cam footage showing him getting out of the car to take a look afterwards.
The cat’s body was found on Shan Pui Ho East Road in Yuen Long. According to the dash cam footage released by another driver, Chow, the tragedy occurred around 2.38 am on June 12. The cat was seen lying on the road when a white Benz drove on without stopping, rolling over the cat.
The driver then got out of the car to take a look at the cat but didn’t report the incident to the police. Since the road was a dead end, the car made a U-turn and later drove back, rolling over the cat for a second time.
The scene was discovered by Chow around 7 am the same day as he walked near his car. Chow then checked the horrible footage captured by his dash cam and filed a report to the police.
The police later successfully contacted the car owner who told officers that her husband, surnamed Cheng, was driving at the time. Cheng had also contacted the police and turned himself in upon learning of the incident, the owner said.
Replying to media inquiries, police said after an in-depth investigation by the New Territories North regional traffic unit, officers arrested a 29-year-old man, Cheng, around 11.40 pm on Thursday for careless driving, failing to stop the vehicle and report to the police after an accident.
Cheng is currently remanded in custody.
The deceased cat was a female adult, according to the animal concern group that handled the body. The person-in-charge, Man Lau, also said the cat’s death was very gruesome since the head was completely “flattened”.
Lau added that he earlier received a call from the Yuen Long Police Station, saying the police have taken over the case and will seize the cat’s body as evidence. Lau will later arrange a funeral for the cat after retrieving the body from the police.
