The Education Bureau has demanded a Tsuen Wan school for a report after a student disrupted a lesson by playing the national anthem and kicking the desks.
A video surfaced online recently showing a student being disruptive in class. A student can be seen in the video misbehaving when the teacher was conducting the lesson, the student can also be seen playing the national anthem using a mobile phone.
When asked for a comment, AD & FD POHL Leung Sing Tak School confirmed that the event happened in October last year, with the school already having initiated an investigation.
The school said it is following up on the incident closely and will provide counseling and educational work for the individuals involved, also calling on members of the public to give time and space for students to learn in a safe and peaceful environment.
The Education Bureau said it had reached out to the school after noting the incident, and had requested the school to submit a detailed report
The bureau also noted that the National Anthem Ordinance and the National Flag and National Emblem (Amendment) Ordinance have clear provisions regarding the etiquette to be observed during flag-raising ceremonies and the singing of the national anthem.
Schools should educate students about such etiquette, and if any student engages in disrespectful behavior towards the national anthem, the school should follow up immediately, it said.
Schools should also handle such situations in accordance with their own circumstances, consistent disciplinary and counseling arrangements, and in a manner that is appropriate, reasonable, and lawful, with the aim of encouraging students to make improvements, the bureau added.
