There have been calls for increased subsidies as three more kindergartens announced their closures within one week.
Yiu Wing Anglo-Chinese Kindergarten, which announced last Thursday that they would be closing down in August 2025, with the principal citing the decrease in brithrate and emigration wave as one of the many reasons for its closure, as it led to a large financial loss.
There were still many parents taking their children to school as per usual after the announcement of the closure.
A parent surnamed Mak said that she found it sad that their child was the last generation of graduates as the school had a lot of history, with the father also being one of the alumni.
Mei Lam Estate To Kwong Kindergarten under the same school sponsoring body also announced their closure, with many parents feeling sad that a school whose teaching staff so dedicated to the students was forced to close down.
Rightmind Kindergarten, a private kindergarten located in South Horizons, announced that they will be shutting down in July this year.
Nancy Lam Chui-ling, vice chairwoman of the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers, said the closure might be due to the increase in rent affecting operation and urged the landlords to avoid raising rents too high.
She added that for the non-profit kindergartens, the government needs to provide more subsidies based on head count so that they can fight against the population decrease.
Lam also pointed out that after the kindergartens close down, the students are unable to visit their teachers after graduation, which might negatively affect their mental health.
