The carnival, headed by the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee and Leisure and Cultural Services Department, was held at the soccer pitch of Pak Tai Temple Playground. It aims to familiarize the public with the bun scrambling tradition and local customs.
The event also featured stall games, handicraft making, variety shows, etc.
Visitors with 1 meter or above in height have the opportunity to discover the fun of climbing first-hand at the 14-meter-tall bun tower.
A father-son duo was able to reach the top. The father, surnamed Chung, said the family joined the carnival once before the pandemic and hoped his son could learn more about traditional Chinese culture.
Another visitor came to the carnival with a number of friends studying abroad in the United Kingdom. She said the first-hand climbing experience was a perfect way to familiarize tourists with Chinese culture.
A Bun Tower Climbing Team Relay and an Ultimate Team Challenge for local tertiary institutions, government departments, public utilities, commercial and industrial organizations were also held this morning.
Separately, three bun towers of the Bun Scrambling Competition collapsed amid the bad weather yesterday (May 4), with many workers were seen strengthening the tower frames today.
Bun Festival Committee chairman Yung Chi-ming said it was a rare incident and that the tower could be rebuilt within a few days.
The final will be held from 11.30pm on May 15 to 12.45am on May 16. Both male and female finalists will compete at the same time, scrambling for buns, which carry scores varying with their locations, on the bun tower within a time limit.
The one with the highest total score will be declared a winner, while the one who bags the most buns within the specified time will be the prize winner of “Full Pockets of Lucky Buns”.
