The defendant Lam Chun-kit, 47, earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud.
At West Kowloon Court today, magistrate Jason Wan Siu-ming handed the community service order after considering his guilty plea and mitigating factors, including his repayment made to the HKPCU.
Wan also accepted that it was the first time Lam had committed a crime and he showed remorse.
The court heard that Lam was a police constable and a member of the HKPCU at the time, which provided a loan service to its members.
In February and October 2021, Lam made two loan applications to the HKPCU, declaring he had no loans from banks or other financial institutions. He was subsequently granted the two loans totaling over HK$140,000.
The ICAC later received a corruption complaint referred by the police and an investigation revealed that Lam had outstanding loans totaling at least HK$1.25 million with a bank and three other financial institutions at the time of applying for the two loans.
The graft-buster extended gratitude towards the police and the HKPCU for their full assistance during the investigation into the case.
