People will be able to do much more than splash water at each other during the Songkran Festival celebration in Kowloon City this April, as the area’s district council is planning a carnival filled with food and entertainment to attract visitors in a bid to spur the area’s economy.
The Kowloon City District Office, in collaboration with the district council and the Hong Kong Kowloon City Industry and Commerce Association, proposed holding the carnival in mid-April at Kowloon City, a neighborhood known to Hongkongers as “Little Thailand.”
According to the proposal, the carnival will provide visitors with authentic Thai cuisine, music, Thai boxing competitions, and other cultural experiences.
It will be accompanied by exciting activities and promotions to promote the unique food, shopping, and entertainment options in Kowloon City.
The Kowloon City District Office said local Thais and organizations organize Songkran celebrations each year in the district to celebrate the Thai New Year, and that the district council could tag on the celebrations to better utilize resources.
Meanwhile, the Industry and Commerce Association plans to collaborate with local merchants to provide e-payment discounts and rebates to residents, including special offers for night markets, to liven up and energize Kowloon City during the carnival.
