The Fanling Golf Course has won a UNESCO conservation award, which the golf club applied earlier in a bid to stop the government from building public housing on it.
Despite the government taking back a 32-hectare area of the golf course in September, the Hong Kong Golf Club still urged the government to allow it to keep fairways and greens.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization announced Thursday (Dec 21) that the golf club and two other projects in Yangzhou and Kerala, India, have garnered an Award of Distinction for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
A total of 48 project entries from eight countries across the Asia-Pacific region were submitted to the UNESCO jury.
“Entries were notably diverse in scope and typology. The jury noted that, taken together, all entries collectively represent significant ongoing progress in heritage conservation awareness and practice in the region,” UNESCO said.
