The first day of operation of the HKeToll system at Eastern Harbour Crossing on Sunday was generally smooth.
The new electronic auto-toll system rolled out at 5 am, making it the last harbor crossing in the city to start using the electronic toll system.
The number of lanes on the Hong Kong Island side was reduced from seven to four, while there were only three lanes on the Kowloon side.
There were multiple signs reminding drivers that they did not need to stop to pay the toll, and the toll booths were covered with black cloth.
Some cars were still cautious and slowed down as they got near the old toll booths. They were then urged to keep going by drivers behind them.
Acting Transport Commissioner Macella Lee Sui-chun arrived at 4 am today to inspect the implementation of the HKeToll arrangements.
With all three harbor crossings equipped with the free-flow tolling service, Tate's Cairn Tunnel and Aberdeen Tunnel are next in line. Details will be announced later this year.
