Tuen Mun district council held a meeting Tuesday to discuss the government's proposal to develop a green transport system in Hung Shui Kiu/Ha Tsuen New Development Area.
The Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) suggested using a green road-based mode that will utilize the eco-friendly bus system and trackless trams.
Chung Lok-chin, the chief engineer of the west development office of CEDD, said trackless mode is cheaper and more visually appealing than elevated track modes.
Some lawmakers were worried the road-based green transport system would lead to traffic congestion. However, Chung stated that dedicated intersections would be set up depending on traffic, while busy intersections could adopt a layered separation method to ensure smooth traffic.
Senior engineer of the Transport Department Wilson Man Ka-ho added that the design of the intersections has yet to be finalized and will depend on the flow of cars. He does not rule out the possibility that there will be arrangements to give trackless trams priority over road use.
