A great number of police officers in tactical vests were seen patrolling at Yuen Long MTR station and the public transport interchange outside on the fourth anniversary of the July 21 Yuen Long mob attack.
As of 5.30 pm on Friday, up to 20 officers could be seen at the interchange as they stopped citizens and searched their bags.
One of the citizens searched by police was social activist Alexandra Wong, dubbed “Grandmother Wong,” who pulled out a British flag and a yellow umbrella from her bag.
Reporters were also requested to display their press cards and register their identities.
Several police vehicles were parked in the area, and officers were also stationed at the entrance of the rural village of Nam Pin Wai.
In response to media inquiries, police said a total of 69 people were arrested over the attack four years ago, and 22 of them faced prosecution.
So far, only eight of the white-clad attackers have been convicted and jailed between three-and-a-half years and seven years. Five have filed for an appeal.
One person walked free after their trial, but the Department of Justice also filed an appeal.
Meanwhile, at least eight other citizens were charged with rioting, including then-lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting. The trial will begin as soon as October.
