With Hong Kong gradually returning to normal after the three-year pandemic, its impact starts to surface in various areas. In particular, children from underprivileged families who live in cramped spaces have suffered from the lack of exercise, malnutrition and sleep deprivation.
Recent studies reveal that only a quarter of Hong Kong's children and adolescents have been able to reach the recommended level of physical activity, while a quarter of the study group are overweight or obese.
Furthermore, due to financial constraints during the pandemic, underprivileged families had to rely on canned food or fast food as their primary source of nutrition. Their imbalanced diet that lacks fresh fruits and vegetables puts them at risk of prolonged vitamin D deficiency which can lead to skeletal health issues and immunodeficiency.
In view of their declining health, Mannings is joining hands with The Hub Hong Kong, a local children's support centre dedicated to providing educational support to the underprivileged, to launch the charitable campaign "Helping Kids Grow Happier, Healthier and Stronger".
The year-long campaign aims to support over 2,200 underprivileged families and children with a target to raise HK$2 million through HK$2 donations from Mannings to The Hub Hong Kong for every Mannings Own Brand Health Supplements sold.
Leveraging its strengths and resources, the retail giant will be donating Mannings' Own Brand Health Supplements and organizing an array of health education activities to provide comprehensive assistance to children from underprivileged families in Hong Kong.
Speaking at the kick-off ceremony, Ian McLeod, Chief Executive of DFI Retail Group, explains that Mannings, as part of DFI Retail Group, is no stranger to charitable campaigns. As social responsibility is an important part of what it does as a company, the group has launched numerous campaigns across its businesses and markets to serve the local community.
“As the wellbeing of local underprivileged children has drawn our attention, being a responsible company, we should take the lead and raise awareness of children’s health and wellbeing,” says McLeod.
“Mannings’ ‘Helping Kids Grow Happier, Healthier and Stronger’ Charity Campaign can help bridge the healthcare gap for underprivileged children, safeguarding the next generation and boosting their self-esteem in the long run,” he adds.
Meanwhile, Josephine Leung, Executive Director of The Hub Hong Kong, points out that the pandemic has exacerbated the existing poverty problem in Hong Kong with more than 270,000 children living below the poverty line.
“We are particularly concerned with the situation in Sham Shui Po as there is a large population of underprivileged children living in poor conditions who are suffering from malnutrition and have only limited space for exercise,” she says.
She is very grateful for Mannings’ “Helping Kids Grow Happier, Healthier and Stronger” charity campaign for putting together the collective efforts of the community to donate health products and organize activities for children in need, which can help to nurture their potentials without compromising the priority of mental health.
Let’s lend a helping hand
The general public is invited to help out simply by purchasing Mannings’ Own Brand Health Supplements sold both online and physical Mannings stores in Hong Kong.
Starting from 9 June 2023, for each Mannings’ Own Brand Health Supplements sold, Mannings will donate HK$2 to The Hub Hong Kong. The campaign will last for one year.
To step up its effects, 9 June 2023 to 22 June 2023 will be “Double Up Days” on which Mannings will double the donation from HK$2 to HK$4 for every Mannings’ Own Brand Health Supplements sold.
Mannings Own Brand Health Supplements consist of an extensive range of more than 50 value-for-money products. Among them, the top five recommended series of products include “Vitamin C & Immunity”, “Multivitamins”, “Probiotics”, “Kids” and “Bones & Joints”.
Funds raised, with a target donation of HK$2 million, will benefit underprivileged children through a series of activities and programs, including health awareness activities, community sports programs, health workshops and lectures, and nutritionist consultation services by Mannings pharmacists and dieticians.
Mannings’ Own Brand Health Supplements will also be sold at cost to The Hub Hong Kong. These include “Kids Calcium + D3 Gummies” and “Kids Chewable C + Zinc Tablets” for the children in need in Sham Shui Po and Yau Tsim Mong districts.
“Let’s Get Healthy” Festival raises awareness on wellbeing
The fun-filled "Let’s Get Healthy" Festival, jointly organized by the Mannings and The Hub Hong Kong, was held on 27 May 2023 at Christian Alliance International School of Hong Kong.
With exciting game booths and professional health consultation services provided by registered pharmacists and nutritionists from Mannings, underprivileged children in the nearby Sham Shui Po and Yau Tsim Mong districts enjoyed a pleasant day with their families.
As parents and children learn more about healthy lifestyles while having a great time playing sports and staying active, the Mannings volunteer team prepared and distributed delightful gift packs as a blessing to the kids for a happy and healthy childhood.
