A cyclist without any protective gear was spotted pedalling on a bicycle along the Hung Hom Cross Harbour Tunnel last Thursday.
The man was captured in a video taken by drivers in the tunnel, who subsequently posted it online and aroused heated discussion.
The man, without any helmet or protective gear, was seen riding a bike with a taillight. He was paddling right behind a truck.
The driver who posted the video said he was shocked. “How can a bicycle cross the tunnel? Without a helmet? Are you crazy? Or you think you are so cool?” He asked.
“And the bike came with a taillight, even though it has to be paddled. It’s my first time seeing something like this. Pedal harder. Pedal harder,” he said.
Cheng King-fai, manager of Cross Harbour Tunnel operations, confirmed that surveillance camera footage showed a biker riding into the tunnel from Gloucester Road in Wan Chai at about 7.20pm last Thursday.
"Due to the heavy traffic, and that the bicycle was closely following the truck, our staffer did not notice it," he said.
He also said that considering the speed, it is estimated that the bike was an electric one and the company has reported to the police to follow up on the case.
Cheung added that the company will deploy more staff to monitor the entrances on both sides of the tunnel to intercept bicycles entering.
According to the Road Tunnels (Government) Regulations, a person entering a tunnel on foot and by bike is liable to six months in jail and a HK$5,000 fine.
