HKU council chairman Arthur Li Kwok-cheung said the council has unanimously decided to invite Zhang to stay on as President and Vice-Chancellor for another five-year term, effective July 2023.
Zhang became HKU President in July 2018, succeeding Peter Mathieson who left the position in January 2018.
Li acknowledged the leadership of Zhang over the past three years, saying the university continued to excel in its research and teaching during the Covid pandemic.
“Notwithstanding the adversities, the university has kept moving ahead with a wide range of ground-breaking strategic ventures, many of which initiated and steered by Professor Zhang, and making significant progress such as the Tech Landmark project on Pokfulam campus, the HKU-Shenzhen campus development, and the global professoriate recruitment scheme to bring top talents to the University,” Li said.
“All these pivotal and far-reaching pursuits will enable HKU to achieve even greater prominence on a world class scale.”
Explaining the early appointment, Li said the council felt there is a strong need for the continuity of the university's leadership.
