The Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union announced today to establish a working group on Chinese history and culture, days after the government said it will no longer recognize the group as a education group.
HKPTU said the working group is to implement the earlier resolution to focus on profession and rights in education.
The group is said to raise awareness of Chinese history and culture, and cultivate national sentiments among teachers and students through various activities.
HKPTU invited Cheung Man-kwong, former chairman of HKPTU, and Chen Yan-kai, veteran Chinese history teacher and Deputy Director of HKPTU, to be the convenor to the group. History teacher Cheung Wong will be the vice convenor.
Last Saturday, the Education Bureau has announced to cut ties with HKPTU, slamming it for being too "political" . The union then withdrew from Education International yesterday.
HKPTU emphasized that it will focus on the resolution announced by the Executive Committee on August 3, which is to focus on the profession and rights of education and to make all efforts to work on core missions, serve members, and provide diverse welfare services for them.
