Over 211 tonnes of suspected scheduled wood logs of an endangered species have been seized by the Customs today, marking the largest seizure of scheduled wood logs in the past five years.
The estimated value of the wood logs is worth about HK$1.1 million, according to Customs.
Officers selected seven containers from Cambodia, at the Kwai Chung Customhouse Cargo Examination Compound and the Tsing Yi Customs Cargo Examination Compound, between April 29 and today through risk assessment.
After inspection officers found the batch of suspected scheduled wood logs inside the seven containers.
Customs added that the case has been passed to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation.
The Customs also reminded the public to report any suspected smuggling activities.
According to the law, the maximum penalty for importing or exporting an endangered species without a license carries a fine of HK$10 million and 10-year imprisonment.
