Legal sector lawmaker Dennis Kwok Wing-hang said he fears that more foreign non-permanent judges may resign from Hong Kong's courts, following Australian judge Justice James Spigelman’s resignation from the city's top court.
Kwok said that if reports are true that Spigelman resigned for reasons related to the Beijing-imposed National Security Law, then it shows how the law is undermining Hong Kong’s rule of law and Hong Kong as an international financial center.
“The news might discourage some countries like the UK from sending their own judges to Hong Kong to sit on the Court of Final Appeal,” he added, saying today was "a very sad day for Hong Kong", and thanked Spigelman for his work in the SAR.
